Inhalte

What role do current and emergent technologies, play in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? This course will introduce the SDGs and go through particular technologies that play a role both in the design and implementation of various SDGs. Insights into current and emerging technologies and the conceptual tools to understand the threats and opportunities of these new tools will be discussed. The course engages not only with theoretical but also with practical literature from international, regional and local agencies involved in the pursuit of SDGs. After mapping the history of international development and current debates on new technologies, some key conceptual and analytical approaches will be introduced. Here, we will critically elaborate on how digital technologies are altering and are altered by development discourses. In mapping sectorial issues connecting to the respective SDG, we will examine some key topics of concern to governments and development practitioners such as ICT for development (ICT4D), e-governance, the effects on labor conditions and gender equality as well as the role of technology for transparency and accountability. Various experts from the field of international development will be invited to present their current projects and engage in discussions with the students.
